Benjamin Morris was born in Guntersville, AL and first enlisted in the USMC in March 1924 and served in all types of duty stations, including the Nicaraguan Campaign in 1927. Upon separation from the USMC, he enlisted in the US Navy in June 1928. Then Pharmacist's Mate First Class Benjamin Morris was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession as a diver during the rescue and salvage operations following the sinking of the U.S.S. SQUALUS on 23 May1939. His courage and devotion to duty in making repeated dangerous dives during the most difficult diving conditions characterizes conduct far above and beyond the call of duty.
