Edgar E Guthrie was born on 3 July 1948 in Nashville, Tennessee. He entered the military on 10 May 1972 from Huntsville, Alabama. After training as a rifleman at Fort Benning, Georgia, Private Guthrie was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam. On 2 January 1968, while serving as a rifleman with Company D, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 50th Infantry, Private First Class Guthrie was conducting a search and clear mission near An Loc, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large hostile force, PFC Guthrie sustained a serious wound, but continued to expose himself to the hostile fire as he assaulted the enemy position. His action contributed greatly to the successful completion of his unit's mission. For his heroism on this day, Private First Class Edgar Guthrie was awarded the Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device.
