Robert Bennett was born on 23 April 1917 in Washington Township, Ohio, and volunteered for service in the US Army on 30 January 1941. He served in three wars - World War II, Korea and Vietnam over his 32 years of duty before being medically retired in 1972. His service included duty in the infantry, cavalry and armor branches. While serving with the 6th Armored Division, the Super Sixth, during World War II, Private Bennett was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against German forces. Robert Bennett was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1948. Colonel Bennett's last assignment was as Chief of Staff for the US Army Safeguard System Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama.
