Ben Hope was born in Hazel Green, Alabama and living in Huntsville, Alabama, prior to enlisting in the US Army National Guard on 30 June 1917. Private Ben Hope was assigned to Company D, 167th Infantry Regiment ("4th Alabama"), 42nd Division (Rainbow Division), American Expeditionay Force in July 1917. Ben Hope's company was engaged with German forces at the Croix Rouge Farm, northeast of Chateau-Thierry France on July 26, 1918. Later named the Battle of Soissons. After he had been wounded in the head, Private Hope continued to advance against the enemy until he had benn wounded three more times. He died as a result of these wounds. Private Ben Hope was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation's seconded hightest award for heroism.
